Gazipur: A suspect in a robbery case escaped from the Gazipur District Court premises after removing his handcuffs on Monday afternoon.
The fugitive, Samrat Hossain (27), is the son of Dulal Mondal from Tattapara village in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district. He had been residing in the Targachh Borobari area under Gacha Police Station in Gazipur Metropolitan.
According to police sources, Samrat, who had been arrested in connection with a robbery case filed with Gazipur Sadar Metropolitan Police Station, was brought out of the court lockup at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday to be produced before the court. While being escorted to the courtroom for judicial proceedings, he allegedly managed to remove his handcuffs and fled.
The officers on duty immediately chased him but failed to apprehend him. Following the escape, police intensified searches in the surrounding areas and launched operations at several possible hideouts.
The sources further said Samrat is wanted in multiple robbery cases filed at police stations in Gazipur and other parts of the country. The police are conducting a special operation using information technology and intelligence to locate and arrest the fugitive.
