A colourful procession was held in Old Dhaka on Friday to celebrate the 416th anniversary of the capital as part of the month-long ‘Hridoye Dhaka 416’ festival organised by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Thousands of people joined the procession, which began at Laxmibazar, passed through several streets of Old Dhaka and ended at Nagar Bhaban.
The procession showcased Dhaka’s rich history, heritage and culture, including replicas of historic landmarks such as Lalbagh Fort, Ahsan Manzil, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Central Shaheed Minar, Tara Mosque, Dhakeshwari Temple and Dhaka Gate.
Traditional foods, including bakarkhani, Nanna Biryani and Beauty Lassi, as well as old modes of transport such as steamers, horse-drawn carriages and palanquins, were also featured.
Speaking after the procession, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said the initiative aimed to inspire citizens to develop greater love, responsibility and a sense of belonging towards Dhaka.
The colourful event turned the streets of Old Dhaka into a festive gathering, with people of all ages participating and lining the roads to watch the procession.
