Garment workers from several factories blocked a road in the Azampur area of Uttara in the capital on Monday, demanding a wage increase, disrupting traffic on one side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and triggering severe congestion on surrounding roads.

The workers gathered in Azampur on Monday morning and began demonstrating before taking to the road around 11:00am, bringing traffic on one side of the highway to a halt.

The blockade caused long traffic tailbacks on nearby roads, leaving commuters stranded and disrupting their journeys.

Rashedul Islam, who was travelling for urgent work, said he had been stuck on a bus for a long time before deciding to walk to his destination.

A marketing officer, Sajjad Hossain, said the blockade had added to the usual traffic pressure on the second working day of the week, making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations on time.

He urged the authorities concerned to take prompt steps to resolve the situation.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for South Khan, KHM Ershad, said police had been deployed in the area to maintain order.
