The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will launch its women-only bus service in Dhaka on Tuesday (August 18), with pink-coloured buses exclusively carrying female passengers. Both the drivers and assistants will also be women.
The buses will operate on designated routes across the capital.
The service will be inaugurated at 10am Tuesday at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon.
Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam will attend the inauguration as the chief guest. State Minister for Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid will attend as a special guest.
Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Mohammad Ziaul Haque will also attend the event. BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Molla will preside over the programme.
The government has taken the initiative to introduce women-only buses in the capital as part of its election pledge.
According to a recent BRTC press release, the initiative aims to ensure safer and more comfortable public transport for women while also creating greater employment opportunities for women in the transport sector.
