Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have said that the Zia family has provided leadership to the nation during critical periods, while calling on Bangladeshis at home and abroad to remain united for building a democratic and prosperous country.
The remarks were made at a views-exchange meeting organised by the Michigan chapter of the BNP at Aladdin Restaurant in Hamtramck, Michigan, on July 28. The event drew a large gathering of party leaders, activists and supporters from different cities despite being held on a working day.
Former Assistant Private Secretary to a former President of Bangladesh and adviser to the Sylhet district BNP, Taymur Hossain Bipul, attended the programme as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Bipul highlighted the contributions of Bangladeshi expatriates to the country’s economy, saying their role extends beyond remittance earnings to supporting the nation during times of crisis and development.
He praised the leadership of late President Ziaur Rahman, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, saying the Zia family had guided the country through challenging periods.
He also urged Bangladeshis both at home and abroad to work together to establish a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.
The meeting was chaired by Michigan BNP President Dewan Akmal Chowdhury and moderated by General Secretary Selim Ahmed.
Ahbab Hossain Chowdhury Khokon, president of the North New York Metropolitan BNP, attended the programme as the special guest. Other BNP leaders also addressed the meeting, stressing the need to further strengthen the organisation and enhance unity among party members.
