A Bangladeshi couple living in Malaysia has once again captured international attention by proudly showcasing Bangladesh’s cultural heritage at a global Google event, while continuing to inspire millions through their contributions to the Google Maps Local Guides community.
Pavel Sarwar and Sumaiya Zafrin Chowdhury represented Bangladesh at Connect Live Singapore 2026, one of Google’s most prestigious gatherings for top Google Maps contributors from around the world. Dressed in traditional Bengali attire, with Sumaiya wearing a saree and Pavel in a panjabi and lungi, the couple drew admiration for promoting Bangladesh’s rich cultural identity on the global stage.
Their appearance reflected not only personal pride but also a broader effort to introduce Bangladesh’s traditions and heritage to an international audience.
The couple first gained worldwide recognition after Google featured them in a Valentine’s Day story titled “Meet the Couple That Guides Together,” highlighting how their shared passion for community service and digital mapping has strengthened both their relationship and their commitment to helping people worldwide through Google Maps.
Their story began in 2012 when they met during a social service programme in Bangladesh. According to Pavel, it was love at first sight. They married the following year, but their relationship soon evolved into a long-distance marriage after Pavel moved to Malaysia in 2015 to pursue higher education while Sumaiya remained in Bangladesh to continue her work as an entrepreneur, researcher, community leader and social worker.
Despite living in different countries for years, they remained closely connected through their shared dedication to the Google Local Guides programme, contributing reviews, photographs, videos and map edits that improve navigation and help millions of users make informed decisions.
Their consistent contributions have earned them international recognition.
Pavel, now a technology professional based in Malaysia, attended the Local Guides Summit 2017 at Google’s headquarters in California and was later featured on the official Google Local Guides YouTube channel. In 2021, he received the Guiding Star Award in the Community Builder category before participating in Connect Live Tokyo 2025. His latest invitation to Connect Live Singapore 2026 further reflects his standing within the global community.
Sumaiya has built an equally distinguished profile. A researcher specialising in learning disabilities, she won the Guiding Star Award in the Helpful Hero category in 2020 and served as a Local Guides Connect Moderator, mentoring contributors from around the world.
She attended Google’s flagship Local Guides events in the United States in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, followed by the Connect Moderator Conversation in Tokyo in 2023 and Connect Live Tokyo 2025.
Google has also recognised her contributions on several occasions. She was featured as an “Inspiring Woman” on International Women’s Day in 2017 and later appeared in Google’s Valentine’s Day campaign celebrating Local Guides couples, as well as a special feature marking the Bengali New Year.
For Pavel and Sumaiya, the Local Guides platform has become much more than a digital community. It has evolved into a shared mission to make travel and local information more accurate, accessible and trustworthy.
Together they regularly explore new places, publish detailed reviews, upload photographs and videos, verify business information and suggest map corrections that benefit users across the globe.
Now based in Malaysia, the couple continue to encourage others to contribute to the platform, believing that even a simple review, an updated location or a helpful photograph can make a meaningful difference to someone’s journey.
By combining technology with community service and cultural pride, Pavel and Sumaiya have emerged as global ambassadors not only for the Google Local Guides community but also for Bangladesh, demonstrating how small digital contributions can create a lasting international impact while celebrating the country’s identity on the world stage.
