Ahmadul Kobir, Kuala Lumpur: A delegation from the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia visited the KLIA Immigration Camp on August 20 to meet detained Bangladeshi nationals, assess their situation and provide necessary consular assistance.
Led by Siddiqur Rahman, Minister (Labour) at the Bangladesh High Commission, the delegation met 20 Bangladeshi detainees and spoke to them about the circumstances surrounding their detention, their current conditions and the assistance they required.
The detainees were given an opportunity to raise their concerns directly with the delegation. Officials subsequently took steps to provide the necessary consular support and guidance.
The delegation also facilitated phone conversations between the detainees and their family members in Bangladesh. Several detainees who had been separated from their families for a prolonged period expressed relief after speaking with their loved ones. Officials said the opportunity to reconnect with their families provided important emotional support during their detention.
During the visit, the delegation also carried out citizenship verification procedures for the Bangladeshi nationals at the camp. Following the verification, the detainees were provided with relevant consular services and guidance on citizenship, identity and other related matters.
The delegation held discussions with the camp authorities on the situation of the Bangladeshi detainees, with particular attention to ensuring their access to consular assistance. The officials also discussed steps that could facilitate the repatriation of eligible detainees to Bangladesh, where necessary.
The Bangladesh High Commission regularly undertakes initiatives to safeguard the welfare and rights of Bangladeshi nationals in Malaysia. As part of these efforts, its officials visit detention centres, meet Bangladeshi nationals in custody, assess their problems, facilitate communication with their families and provide consular assistance.
The KLIA camp visit enabled the High Commission to gather first-hand information about the condition of the detained Bangladeshi nationals and identify measures needed to address their concerns and ensure continued consular support.
