A young man from Sylhet was reportedly stabbed to death by his roommate in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following an argument over rent and cooking, according to his family.
The deceased was identified as Matiur Rahman, 25, son of Abdus Salam of Bagharpar village in West Islampur Union of Companiganj upazila.
Matiur went to Saudi Arabia in February this year. He is survived by a three-and-a-half-month-old child.
His younger brother Saifur Rahman said the incident took place on Monday night in Riyadh’s Hara area, and the family learned about it through relatives on Tuesday morning.
“Matir had been having disputes with his roommates for several days over sleeping arrangements and cooking. After returning from work on Monday, another argument broke out and, at one point, he was attacked with a kitchen knife. He died at the scene,” Saifur said.
He alleged that two brothers from Gowainghat upazila, who shared the room with Matiur, were involved in the incident and fled after the killing.
Later, a brother-in-law of one of the roommates returned from work, found Matiur’s body and informed local police, the family said.
Matiur’s cousin Ashraful Islam Khokon said Matiur was a quiet and peaceful person and had told his family two or three days earlier about the disputes with his roommates.
“We could not reach him by phone from Monday. Later, we contacted a villager who shared the room with him and learned about the killing,” he said.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Osman Gani said he had heard verbally about the expatriate’s death but had not received any formal complaint from the family.
