A Bangladeshi expatriate woman and her teenage son were killed in a road accident in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, while her husband was injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

The deceased were identified as Asima Chowdhury, 48, and her only son, Aritra Biswas, 15. Her husband, Sourav Biswas, was injured. Their home village is Purba Kadhurkhil in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram.

The accident occurred on Monday night in Al Wathba, on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, according to their family friend and expatriate community organiser Sajal Chowdhury.

He said Sourav was driving his Toyota Yaris with his family to a gathering in Al Wathba when a Nissan Safari four-wheel-drive vehicle hit their car from behind near Exit 47 on the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road.

The collision damaged their car and killed Asima and Aritra at the scene.

Abu Dhabi police arrived shortly after the accident and rescued the injured, taking them to Mafraq Hospital. Doctors declared the mother and son dead and admitted Sourav for treatment.

Police have seized the vehicle involved in the accident and detained its driver.

Abu Dhabi-based journalist Sanjit Shil said Sourav, an engineer and construction business owner, had been living in Abu Dhabi with his family for around 25 years.

Asima worked at a travel agency in Abu Dhabi and was known among expatriates as a singer and social organiser.

The couple also have a daughter who studies at a university in Dubai Knowledge Village.
