US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka this afternoon for his first-ever visit to Bangladesh.
According to officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gor will arrive in the capital on Thursday (July 30) for a three-day visit, which diplomats view as an important opportunity to assess the current trajectory of Bangladesh’s foreign policy.
Foreign Ministry sources said Gor will hold talks with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman at the State Guest House Padma this evening. Later at night, he is also expected to meet the Finance Minister at the residence of the US Ambassador.
On Friday, Gor will travel to Cox’s Bazar, where he is scheduled to visit several Rohingya refugee camps to gain a first-hand understanding of the humanitarian situation.
On the final day of his visit, Saturday, Gor will meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the morning before departing Dhaka later in the day.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said he had recently met Gor in Manila, where they reviewed bilateral relations.
“Our relationship with the United States is multifaceted, and both sides are keen to strengthen it further,” the minister said.
He added, “Sergio Gor is not only the US Ambassador to India but also President Trump’s Special Representative for South and Central Asia. This is his first visit to Bangladesh. During the trip, he will seek to better understand Bangladesh and meet with a wide range of stakeholders. He is already well aware of the Rohingya issue.”
Diplomatic sources said the United States may seek greater clarity on Bangladesh’s growing engagement with China, particularly regarding Beijing’s proposed Myanmar economic corridor. Discussions are also expected to cover bilateral trade, regional connectivity, and security cooperation under the Indo-Pacific framework.
