Bangladesh has sought a clear explanation from the Indian government regarding the reported participation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been convicted in Bangladesh, in a virtual event scheduled for August 5, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday.
Speaking at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the state minister said Dhaka wanted New Delhi to clarify its position on the matter.
She said any political activities by Sheikh Hasina from Indian territory could have a negative impact on bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
“The Bangladesh government wants to know India’s clear position regarding the reported virtual participation of Sheikh Hasina in the August 5 programme,” she told reporters.
Responding to a separate question, Shama Obaed said a 22-member US delegation would visit Dhaka as part of maritime security cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.
She said the cooperation falls within the broader Indo-Pacific framework and reflects ongoing collaboration between the two countries on regional security issues.
The state minister also said agreements signed with the United States would continue to be honoured, provided they serve Bangladesh’s national interests.
According to Indian media reports, Sheikh Hasina is expected to join virtually a programme to be held in New Delhi on August 5. The event is reportedly being organised following her removal from office during the student-led mass uprising in Bangladesh.
