Bangladesh and the United States have discussed expanding cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), alongside prospects for increased US investment.
The discussions took place during a meeting in Dhaka on Monday between Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and Eric Geelan, political and economic counsellor at the US Embassy, according to an official press release.
Senior officials from the ministry and representatives from the US Embassy also attended the meeting.
Both sides explored ways to deepen collaboration in LNG and LPG, encourage greater participation of US companies in Bangladesh’s energy market, and strengthen government-to-government (G2G) engagement. They also discussed the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalise cooperation.
The talks included identifying priority areas for the proposed MoU, addressing challenges to bilateral energy collaboration, and outlining a roadmap to enhance Bangladesh’s energy security.
The issue of expanding US private sector involvement featured prominently, particularly ahead of the prime minister’s upcoming visit to the United States.
During the meeting, the minister urged swift engagement with relevant stakeholders to move the cooperation process forward, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening energy ties with the US.
Geelan welcomed the discussions and reiterated Washington’s interest in supporting the development of Bangladesh’s energy sector.
