State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam is leaving for Singapore today, Sunday (August 9), on a four-day official visit.
This will be the first official visit to Singapore by a member of the cabinet since the current government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, took office in February.
During her visit, the State Minister is scheduled to hold meetings with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zulkifli bin Abdul Rahim, and Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash.
She will also visit PSA International, one of Singapore’s leading port management companies, as well as TuasOne, one of the country’s modern waste-to-energy facilities.
Around 150,000 Bangladeshi nationals live in Singapore and make an important contribution to Bangladesh’s economy by sending their hard-earned foreign currency back home. In recognition of their significant contribution, a “Remittance Honour 2026” event has been organised in Singapore, where the State Minister is expected to attend as the chief guest.
This is the first high-level visit to Singapore by a representative of the new government. The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Singapore, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, port and logistics cooperation, technology, manpower, and sustainable development.
