India wants to build positive, constructive and forward-looking relations with Bangladesh based on mutual interests and reciprocity, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a regular media briefing in New Delhi, Jaiswal said India remains interested in strengthening bilateral ties and hopes for Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India.
He said New Delhi has already extended a cordial invitation to the prime minister and that any new developments would be shared when available.
On Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other individuals, Jaiswal reiterated that India’s position remains consistent and that such requests are being examined through established processes.
Asked about Bangladesh’s request for additional fuel supplies, he said energy cooperation between the two countries is continuing.
The additional request is being examined in light of India’s own requirements, refining capacity and fuel availability.
On the Teesta water-sharing issue, Jaiswal said India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers and that water-related matters should be discussed through the Joint Rivers Commission and existing bilateral mechanisms.
The remarks come amid tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi over Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India and Bangladesh’s extradition request, as well as uncertainty over Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India.
