The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka commemorated National Mujahid Day on Thursday, honoring two decisive milestones in the nation’s war of liberation: the 1955 North Constantine Offensive and the 1956 Soummam Congress.
Hosted on behalf of Algerian Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, the ceremony gathered diplomatic corps members, Bangladeshi officials, and international guests under the official banner, “We Follow in Their Footsteps of Struggle.”
The observance reflected on the historical momentum linking both landmark events. Led by revolutionary leader Zighout Youcef, the 1955 offensive demonstrated widespread popular backing for the National Liberation Front, expanded the scope of the armed resistance, and elevated Algeria’s fight for independence to the international stage at the United Nations. Exactly one year later, the Soummam Congress provided crucial political and military structure to the revolution, establishing the institutional framework for the future sovereign state.
In remarks delivered during the event, embassy representatives emphasized that the legacy of August 20 continues to guide Algeria’s modern foreign policy, particularly its steadfast advocacy for self-determination, national unity, and global solidarity.
The ceremony also underscored the deep historical parallels between the liberation struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh. Both nations forged their independence through popular resistance against socioeconomic marginalization and cultural suppression, creating a enduring bond of friendship rooted in shared values of dignity and self-determination.
