The United Kingdom has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh and expressed its readiness to work with him and the government to further strengthen bilateral relations.
In a message issued by the British High Commission in Dhaka on Thursday, the UK recalled the longstanding friendship and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
“The UK looks forward to working with Hon. President Fakhrul and the Government of Bangladesh to further strengthen the close and longstanding partnership between our two countries,” the High Commission said.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president on Thursday after securing 255 votes in Parliament, defeating opposition candidate Col (retd) Oli Ahmad, who received 88 votes.
He is scheduled to take the oath of office on Friday evening.
