Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has invited Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit Bhutan at a mutually convenient time.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir welcomed the Bhutanese king at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday (August 26).
A special aircraft carrying the Bhutanese king made a stopover in Dhaka early Wednesday morning while travelling from Singapore to Bhutan.
During his nearly one-hour stay at the airport, the president held a courtesy meeting with the Bhutanese king at the VVIP Lounge. They held cordial discussions on various issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, President Mirza Fakhrul invited the Bhutanese king and members of the royal family to pay a state visit to Bangladesh at a convenient time. In response, the Bhutanese king invited the president and prime minister of Bangladesh to visit Bhutan at a mutually convenient time.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and extended his best wishes on assuming office as president. The president conveyed warm greetings from the people and government of Bangladesh to the Bhutanese king and members of the royal family. In response, the king also extended his best wishes to the people and government of Bangladesh.
During the meeting, President Mirza Fakhrul said Bangladesh and Bhutan share deep and historic ties. He said Bhutan has always held a special place in the hearts of Bangladeshis, as Bhutan was the first country in the world to recognize Bangladesh on December 6, 1971.
The president also recalled with deep respect the special affection and goodwill shown toward Bangladesh by the Bhutanese king’s father, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Highlighting the shared aspirations of the two countries for development and prosperity, the Bhutanese king stressed the need to further expand bilateral cooperation in various areas, including education, trade and investment.
The Bhutanese king also briefed the president on his visionary **Gelephu Mindfulness City** project and sought Bangladesh’s participation and cooperation in the initiative.
President Mirza Fakhrul expressed keen interest in the project and praised the initiative. He said Bangladesh is ready to work closely with Bhutan to advance transformative initiatives in the region aimed at mutual welfare, prosperity and sustainable development.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, the Bhutanese ambassador to Bangladesh and senior officials of the Bangladesh government were present during the courtesy meeting.
The special aircraft carrying the Bhutanese king departed Dhaka for Bhutan at around 6:30am.
