India and China have reached consensus on several issues concerning their bilateral ties and the management of their disputed border, as the two sides held their 25th round of Special Representatives’ talks in Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Kumar Doval held extensive and candid discussions on the boundary question and broader bilateral relations on Tuesday (August 25).
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, said China and India are important neighbours, major developing countries and emerging economies. He said stable and healthy bilateral ties serve the fundamental interests of both peoples and reflect the shared aspirations of the Global South.
Wang stressed that the importance of China-India relations extends beyond the bilateral sphere and carries broader global and strategic significance.
He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met twice in recent years, in Kazan and Tianjin, and reached several important areas of consensus.
China, Wang said, is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with India from a strategic and long-term perspective, enhance mutual understanding, manage differences and overcome obstacles. He called for the two countries to develop a relationship based on good-neighbourliness, friendship and mutual benefit.
Wang also said exchanges and cooperation at various levels between the two countries have resumed, while both sides remain committed to maintaining peace and stability along the border.
He urged the two sides to learn from past experience and place the border issue in its proper position within the broader framework of bilateral relations. Beijing and New Delhi should work to create a positive environment in which dialogue, peace, negotiations and cooperation remain the dominant trends in handling the boundary question, he said.
Doval said India and China are ancient civilisations with huge populations and significant economic strength. The two countries, he said, should view each other as partners rather than competitors.
A stable, predictable and forward-looking relationship between India and China is in the common interest of their peoples and is also important for Asia and the wider world, Doval said.
He added that under the strategic guidance of their leaders, bilateral relations have returned to the right track. Overall peace has been maintained along the border, while communication and cooperation in various areas continue to advance.
Doval said India is willing to work with China to effectively manage border areas and explore ways to resolve the boundary issue.
During the talks, the two sides held in-depth discussions on advancing negotiations on boundary delimitation, strengthening border management and expanding cross-border cooperation.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to following the political parameters and guiding principles agreed in 2005, based on mutual respect and understanding.
The two countries further agreed to hold the 26th round of the Special Representatives’ talks in India in 2027.
