India is closely monitoring Bangladesh’s interest in joining the Mecca Defence Pact, signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said.
Jaiswal said New Delhi was closely watching developments in West Asia and carefully assessing the pact’s potential impact on India’s national security, as well as regional peace and stability.
His remarks came after Bangladesh expressed a positive view of the possibility of joining the agreement.
The pact, based on the principle of collective defence, states that an armed attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all.
India has stressed that it remains committed to protecting its national interests and will take necessary measures in this regard.
