India wants to develop a positive, constructive and future-oriented relationship with Bangladesh based on mutual interests, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said.
Jaiswal made the remarks while responding to questions about the state of India-Bangladesh relations and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to New Delhi.
He said India remains interested in maintaining engagement with Bangladesh and strengthening bilateral ties on the basis of mutual interests and equality.
Relations between the two neighbours have faced challenges since the change of government in Bangladesh in August 2024. Dhaka has sought the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India, while New Delhi has said the request is being examined according to applicable legal procedures.
Bangladesh has also said it wants to restore bilateral relations with India through direct engagement and build a constructive partnership between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi recently said New Delhi was interested in developing more people-centric relations with Bangladesh.
Against this backdrop, both sides have continued discussions on improving bilateral ties, including trade and investment.
India and Bangladesh are also considering a joint business-to-business task force aimed at addressing obstacles to bilateral trade and boosting investment.
