US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded their Washington summit without any major breakthrough, with the two sides agreeing mainly to extend their trade truce by two months as differences over rare earths, artificial intelligence and Taiwan remained unresolved.
The summit was marked by elaborate ceremonies, including Trump personally welcoming Xi upon his arrival and a lavish state dinner at the White House. The contrast between the pageantry and the limited substantive outcomes was highlighted in an analysis cited by The Economist.
The main practical outcome was the extension of the US-China trade truce, which had been due to expire in November. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two-month extension would provide additional time for Washington and Beijing to continue economic negotiations.
Rare earths remained a major point of contention. China has used export restrictions on rare earths and other critical minerals as leverage in its trade dispute with the United States, while Washington has maintained pressure over technology and semiconductor controls.
There was also no major agreement on artificial intelligence. The two countries had already agreed to establish a formal dialogue on AI safety, including discussions on emergency communication protocols, but the summit did not produce a major new agreement on regulating advanced AI models.
Taiwan remained another unresolved issue. Xi urged Washington to oppose Taiwan’s independence, while the US did not announce any fundamental change in its position. A proposed $14 billion US arms package for Taiwan also remains on hold following Trump’s decision to delay the sale during negotiations with Beijing.
Despite the limited agreements, both sides have an interest in preventing a renewed escalation in relations. Reuters reported that the summit was aimed largely at maintaining the fragile trade détente while broader disputes over technology, security and Taiwan persist.
The continued contact between Trump and Xi could itself help maintain stability, with the two leaders expected to meet again at future international gatherings.
The summit demonstrated that while Washington and Beijing are willing to keep dialogue open, significant differences remain over trade, technology, critical minerals and Taiwan.
