The United States has expressed hope that Bangladesh and India will resolve the issue concerning former prime minister Sheikh Hasina through discussions between the two countries.
A US State Department official said Washington had not taken any formal position on what should happen to Hasina, who has been living in India since being ousted from power in 2024.
“We hope they can discuss it among themselves and reach a solution,” the official said during an off-the-record briefing at the Foreign Press Center in New York on Wednesday.
The official said the issue had become a major source of tension between Bangladesh and India, but Washington had not specified what should happen to Hasina.
Bangladesh has sought Hasina’s extradition from India. India has confirmed receiving the request and said it is being examined in accordance with legal and judicial procedures.
Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, has said she plans to return to Bangladesh around December and surrender.
The US official also said Washington did not want to comment on Bangladesh’s internal politics, including whether restrictions on the activities of the Awami League should be lifted, saying that decision should be taken by the Bangladesh government.
