Two giant pandas from China have arrived at Zoo Atlanta in the United States for a 10-year stay under a cooperation agreement between the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the zoo.

Named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, the male and female pandas were born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan province.

They left Chengdu on Sunday aboard a specially chartered FedEx Boeing 777 and arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Zoo Atlanta has prepared a new panda facility for the pair, with Chinese experts assisting in upgrades and care arrangements.

The pandas will initially remain in quarantine for about a month before being introduced to the public.

The animals’ journey was carefully planned, with fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, apples and medicines provided for the flight.

Chinese and US veterinarians and keepers are also working together to monitor their health and help them adapt to their new surroundings.

The arrival marks the return of giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta after the zoo’s previous pandas were sent back to China in 2024.

The new arrangement is part of longstanding China-US cooperation on giant panda conservation and research.
