India had no alternative but to allow former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina to enter the country amid the crisis surrounding her departure from Bangladesh, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has said.
Speaking at a session of the Bay of Bengal Conference in Dhaka on Saturday,
Trivedi said India acted as it should have as an old and historic friend of Bangladesh during the crisis.
He said it was impossible to know what might have happened if India had refused permission for the aircraft carrying Hasina to land in the country.
Trivedi also clarified that Hasina was not taken to India by the Indian military or air force.
She left Bangladesh aboard a Bangladesh military aircraft and arrived in India on August 5, 2024.
Asked about Bangladesh’s demand for her extradition, the Indian envoy said the matter was part of a judicial and legal process that was proceeding according to its own course.
He said it was not possible to set a specific timeframe for the process because it involved courts and an established legal framework.
