DHAKA: Bangladesh will strongly raise the issue of bringing back ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Faisal, an accused in the murder case of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, during the upcoming fifth consular dialogue with India.

Sources said Bangladesh had proposed holding the meeting in late October. However, India expressed interest in holding the talks in early November due to Durga Puja.

The director-general-level dialogue is expected to take place in Dhaka ahead of a possible visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Alongside various bilateral issues, the return of the three accused will receive particular attention at the meeting. The upcoming dialogue is considered significant amid the current state of relations between the two countries. India’s position on extradition and progress in the discussions could have important implications for Dhaka-New Delhi relations in the coming period.

Dhaka had previously requested Hasina’s extradition through a diplomatic note in December 2024. Following the subsequent verdict by the relevant tribunal, Bangladesh renewed its request to India for her extradition.
