Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday with a Pakistani delegation as Islamabad seeks to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei earlier confirmed Munir’s planned visit, saying he would meet Iranian officials to discuss negotiations with Washington. However, the primary focus of the visit is expected to be strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran.
Munir’s visit comes as talks between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled, amid continuing tensions over maritime security and shipping through the strategic waterway.
On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi blamed the United States for the insecurity surrounding shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the source report.
The visit is being closely watched as Pakistan seeks to facilitate diplomatic engagement between the two sides amid heightened regional tensions.
