Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow on October 27 to discuss economic cooperation, international affairs and key geopolitical issues.

The meeting was reported by Iranian media.Pezeshkian is scheduled to visit Russia to attend a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

Iranian news agency Tasnim, quoting Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali, reported that the two leaders would discuss economic cooperation as well as various international and geopolitical issues.

Relations between Moscow and Tehran have grown closer since Russia launched its full-scale military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Both countries, which face Western sanctions, have expanded cooperation in several areas.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hinted on Friday that talks involving the two presidents could take place next week.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Iran for the first time since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East. During the visit, Araghchi said cooperation between Russia and Iran had become closer than ever.

In early October, Putin said Russia was ready to mediate efforts to end the war launched by the United States and Israel.

However, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have remained stalled for months, while the United States and Israel have threatened further strikes against Iran.

Against this backdrop, the upcoming meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian could also address Middle East security, ongoing conflicts and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.
