Saudi Arabia has announced that it will provide 500 scholarships every year for Bangladeshi students.
The announcement was made by Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah Jafar H. Bin Abiyah during a courtesy meeting with Dr Mahdi Amin at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday (July 17).
During the meeting, the ambassador expressed Saudi Arabia’s strong interest in working closely with Bangladesh’s new government across a wide range of sectors, including politics and the economy.
The two sides also held detailed discussions on potential Saudi support for the development of Bangladesh’s education sector.
The ambassador said the Saudi government has allocated 500 annual scholarships for Bangladeshi students and added that he had already informed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman about the initiative.
The meeting also focused on expanding opportunities for the export of skilled Bangladeshi workers to Saudi Arabia, easing access to the Saudi labour market, and addressing procedural challenges in the recruitment process.
In addition, both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in Hajj and Umrah services, enhancing people-to-people contacts, and exploring new areas of bilateral collaboration.
It was noted that around 3.8 million Bangladeshis currently living in Saudi Arabia are making significant contributions to the Kingdom’s economy and development.
At the same time, their remittances continue to play a vital role in Bangladesh’s economic growth.
Both sides underscored the importance of further deepening the bilateral partnership and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The Saudi delegation included Vice Ambassador Khalid Saeed M. Al Hadal and Mohammed Fahad Dhi Al Suhaimi, Deputy Head of the Consular Section.
