China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s Teesta River project, with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen saying Beijing will continue to assist the initiative in accordance with Bangladesh’s needs and requests.

The ambassador made the remarks at a press conference held at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka on Thursday, where he briefed reporters on the outcomes of Prime Minister Tareq Rahman’s recent visit to China.

Yao Wen said China’s position on the Teesta project has remained consistent and unchanged. “At Bangladesh’s request, China will work on the Teesta project. China will continue to provide support for the project within its capabilities. Beyond this, there are no other issues under our consideration,” he said.

He emphasized that China’s cooperation on the Teesta project is driven by Bangladesh’s development priorities and that Beijing remains ready to contribute to the project’s implementation as requested by Dhaka.

The Teesta River project is considered one of Bangladesh’s major water resource and infrastructure initiatives, aimed at improving irrigation, flood management, river conservation and the livelihoods of people living in the northern region.

The ambassador’s remarks came as Bangladesh and China seek to build on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Tareq Rahman’s recent official visit, during which the two countries discussed expanding cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.
