Abbas Araghchi has welcomed Russia’s stance against what he described as “aggression” by the United States and Israel, during talks with Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of a regional summit.
The meeting took place during the gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Kyrgyzstan, where both diplomats discussed rising tensions in the region, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi blamed Washington for escalating the situation, accusing the United States of “breach of promise and crimes” that have contributed to instability in the area. He stressed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy while reaffirming Tehran’s determination to safeguard its national interests and security.
According to Iran’s state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi also warned against what he called attempts by the US to exploit the Strait of Hormuz as a means of exerting pressure on Iran.
Lavrov, in response, reiterated Moscow’s support for Tehran and expressed Russia’s willingness to assist in establishing a regional security framework. He emphasized that such a mechanism should be led by countries in the region rather than external powers.
The exchange highlights deepening coordination between Iran and Russia amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States and its allies.
