A powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Peru’s southern Andes on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at around 1 p.m. local time and was centered about 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho in the Ayacucho region, at a depth of approximately 66 kilometers.
The tremor was felt across several southern regions, including Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac and Cusco, as well as in Lima.
Authorities reported that at least two people were injured while evacuating their homes.
Damage was reported to 22 houses, six health centers and a school in several districts, while rockfalls were also reported near Coracora.
The Peruvian Navy said there was no threat of a tsunami following the inland earthquake.
Peru lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active zones.
