China has issued a stern warning of another possible flood along the Nepal-Tibet border following devastating floods and landslides in the Himalayan region.
Chinese authorities said a new barrier lake has formed upstream of a Himalayan border crossing, raising fears that it could burst and trigger another disaster. The lake also poses a serious threat to ongoing rescue operations, according to Reuters and NDTV.
China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the Ministry of Water Resources is closely monitoring and assessing the lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen and Puru Tsangpo rivers to prevent further disasters and ensure the safety of rescue efforts.
Firefighters and specialised rescue teams have been deployed from Beijing and Chengdu to assist local police and armed forces. Residents in high-risk areas have already been evacuated.
Power and communications have been restored in the main area of Jirong, but areas near the port remain largely cut off.
The disaster has caused significant casualties and damage on both sides of the border. In Tibet, three deaths have been confirmed, while 558 people, including 260 foreign nationals, remain missing. China’s Foreign Ministry said at least 100 Chinese nationals are also missing in Nepal.
Nepal’s death toll has meanwhile risen to 179.
Experts have warned that the risk of such disasters is increasing in the unstable Himalayan environment. In August 2025, an outburst from a glacier-fed lake caused severe flooding in Tibet, killing nine people.
