Heavy rain and storms have triggered floods and landslides that killed 56 people in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state, while 14 people have died and 11 remain missing in Nepal, authorities said Sunday.

Uttar Pradesh received 66.5 mm of rain between September 25 and the morning of September 27, far above the normal 7.6 mm for the period, state relief commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said.

At least 46 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged. Rescue teams were operating in flooded areas, while officials were assessing crop losses and arranging compensation.

In Nepal, authorities warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country’s 77 districts as water levels in major rivers and tributaries continued to rise.

Shanti Mahat, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said several areas faced elevated flood risks. Rasuwa and Nuwakot, which were badly affected by last month’s floods that killed more than 1,450 people and left thousands missing, were advised to remain alert but were not currently classified as high-risk areas.

The Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada rivers were among those reported above danger levels.

Floods and landslides also disrupted telecommunications in parts of Nepal after damage to optical-fibre networks and power supplies, Communications Minister Bikram Timilsinha said.

Separately, 10 Nepali workers remained missing after an avalanche buried the base camp of 7,126-metre Himlung Himal in northern Manang district. The workers had been preparing tents for foreign climbers, who were not at the camp when the avalanche struck.
