Petrobangla has proposed raising the retail price of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles by more than 50 percent, alongside a sharp increase in gas tariffs for power plants.
The state-owned energy company has submitted the proposal to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD), seeking to raise the CNG price to Tk 65 per cubic metre from the existing Tk 43.
It also proposed increasing the gas tariff for power generation to Tk 25 per cubic metre from the current Tk 15.50.
Petrobangla Chairman Md Abdul Mannan said the proposal was mainly aimed at increasing the margin for CNG filling station operators.
However, the proposal also includes revised gas prices for the transport and power sectors.
Under the existing tariff approved by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), consumers pay Tk 43 per cubic metre for CNG at filling stations, including operators’ margins.
If approved, the proposed revision would raise the retail CNG price by around 51 percent, while the gas tariff for power plants would increase by about 61 percent.
The proposal is now awaiting government approval.
Any change in gas prices will take effect only after clearance from the relevant authorities.
