S Alam Group has shut down all of its factories in Chattogram’s Karnaphuli upazila, leaving around 4,000 workers out of jobs.
Closure notices were posted at the factory gates on Thursday, informing workers that operations had been suspended until further notice.
The move has triggered anxiety among employees, many of whom gathered outside the factories seeking clarification over their future.
According to workers, they were informed that the factories would remain closed because of an acute shortage of raw materials and mounting financial difficulties.
Factory authorities said the shutdown was unavoidable under the current circumstances.
The affected units include sugar, steel and power-related industries located in the Karnaphuli industrial area.
While production has been halted, security, delivery and emergency services will continue to operate.
Workers expressed concern over the sudden loss of employment, saying many families now face uncertainty over their livelihoods.
They urged the authorities and the company to reopen the factories or ensure alternative employment opportunities.
S Alam Group has been facing severe financial constraints in recent months, with difficulties in importing raw materials and obtaining banking support, which have disrupted production at several of its industrial units.
