The Bangladesh government has formed a 27-member National Steering Committee on Creative Economy to promote the country’s creative economy and coordinate activities across related sectors.
The Cabinet Division published a gazette notification on Sunday, announcing the formation of the committee.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has been appointed as its chairman.
According to the terms of reference, the committee will approve sector-specific roadmaps for the creative economy and review progress in their implementation. It will also coordinate and provide guidance on activities involving different ministries and agencies.
The committee will review the work of various sector-based committees and assess implementation progress on a quarterly basis.
It will have the authority to co-opt new members when necessary. Meetings will be held as required, while the Finance Division will provide secretarial support.
The committee includes ministers from the ministries of cultural affairs, industries, commerce, and housing and public works, along with the state minister for planning and an adviser to the finance and planning ministries.
Advisers to the ministries of posts, telecommunications and information technology and science and technology, the prime minister’s special assistant for health affairs, and advisers to the ministries of information and broadcasting and cultural affairs are also members.
Secretaries of the finance, information and broadcasting, youth and sports, cultural affairs, industries, civil aviation and tourism, women and children affairs, information and communication technology, and housing and public works ministries are among the members.
The chairman of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), and representatives from BRAC, HSBC Bangladesh, Bengal Foundation and Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology are also members.
Entrepreneur, fashion designer and model Bibi Russell has been appointed as a sector specialist. Another sector specialist will also join the committee, while an additional secretary of the Finance Division will serve as member-secretary.
