Implementation of the Teesta Master Plan will free Bangladesh’s northern region from disasters such as floods and droughts and turn it into a prosperous area, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said.
“The Teesta Master Plan is closely linked to the prosperity and good fortune of the people of the northern region. The current patriotic democratic government is committed to implementing the plan,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop held at the BIAM auditorium in the capital on Tuesday morning.
The workshop was organised under the “Probhati” project, titled “Enhancing Resilience of Vulnerable Communities through Infrastructure Capacity Development and Information.” It was held to brief participants on the progress of the “Improving Local-Level Flood Early Warning and Dissemination System” project being implemented by the Department of Disaster Management.
Dulu said disasters are closely intertwined with people’s lives in Bangladesh, a country that experiences six distinct seasons and faces various natural calamities regularly.
“The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief stands beside people who lose everything in such disasters and serves as a beacon of hope for them,” he said.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that flood forecasts and warning messages reach people quickly, saying timely information could significantly reduce casualties and property damage.
“For this reason, early warning and dissemination systems at the local level are being made more effective,” the minister said.
The project is being implemented in 19 upazilas across three flood-prone districts in the northwestern region—Gaibandha, Kurigram and Jamalpur.
The initiative aims to improve the local-level seasonal flood forecasting system and help communities prepare for flood risks by disseminating early warning messages.
Director General of the Department of Disaster Management Rezwanur Rahman chaired the workshop.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M. Iqbal Hossain attended the event as a special guest.
ABM Shafiqul Haider, secretary in charge of the ministry, LGED Chief Engineer Belal Hossain and other officials concerned also spoke at the workshop.
