The Laldia Container Terminal (LCT) at Chattogram Port will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including remotely operated cranes, Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said on Thursday.
The foundation stone of the terminal is scheduled to be laid on August 30 with the support of Denmark.
The minister made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from Denmark-based APM Terminals at the Ministry of Shipping on Thursday morning.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam said the terminal would be developed as a modern and environmentally friendly green facility, with cranes operated remotely from offices.
“This will further improve operational efficiency and safety,” he said, adding that the project would also ensure the active participation of women and create new opportunities for inclusive employment in the port sector.
The minister said the construction of the modern, internationally standardised terminal would significantly increase Chattogram Port’s handling capacity.
The project would also play an important role in creating jobs, expanding trade and business and strengthening the national economy, he said.
During the meeting, Sheikh Rabiul Alam praised Denmark’s socioeconomic development and technological advancement and sought cooperation from the Danish government and investors in developing and modernising Bangladesh’s port infrastructure.
He said Bangladesh offered a favourable environment for foreign investment and had significant potential for investment in the port and shipping sectors.
“The government will provide maximum support to foreign investors,” he said.
The minister stressed the need to modernise and improve the efficiency and capacity of port infrastructure in line with Bangladesh’s economic growth and expanding trade.
He said the government was placing emphasis on adopting international expertise and modern technologies to achieve that goal.
Members of the APM Terminals delegation thanked the Bangladesh government for its cooperation in developing port and terminal infrastructure in the country.
They discussed ways to bring modern technology, management expertise and international experience to Bangladesh’s port sector, including the Laldia Container Terminal.
The meeting was attended by Shipping Ministry Secretary Zakaria, the chairman of Chattogram Port Authority, senior ministry officials and the CEO of APM Terminals.
