Egg prices fall by Tk 10 a dozen

There is still little relief for consumers in the capital’s markets, with fish and meat prices remaining largely unchanged.

However, egg prices have fallen by Tk 10 per dozen compared with last week.

A visit to several markets in Dhaka on Friday found that fish prices remained volatile, with the prices of some varieties falling by Tk 20–30 per kg one day and rising again the next, according to traders.

Eggs are now selling for Tk 140 per dozen, down from Tk 150–155 last week.

Beef continues to sell at Tk 800 per kg. Broiler chicken, which was selling for Tk 200 per kg last week, is now available for Tk 190. Prices of Sonali, hybrid and layer chickens remain unchanged. Sonali chicken is selling for Tk 320–340 per kg, hybrid chicken for Tk 290–300, and layer chicken for Tk 350.

Among farmed fish, pangash is selling for Tk 230 per kg and tilapia for Tk 260. Depending on quality, shrimp costs Tk 800–900 per kg, pabda Tk 350–400, rohu Tk 300–500 depending on size, and tengra Tk 700.

Vetki is selling for Tk 400–550 per kg, mrigel Tk 250–300, baim Tk 600–800, local koi Tk 700–800, farmed koi Tk 300, poa Tk 260 and shol Tk 700. Farmed shing is priced at Tk 300–450 per kg depending on size.

Consumers will have to pay more than Tk 1,000 per kg for some varieties, including rupchanda, shol and river bele fish.

Rafiqul Islam, who was buying pangash, said the fish used to cost around Tk 180 per kg but is now priced at no less than Tk 200 at many markets. “Tilapia has increased by Tk 60 in just a few months and is now selling for Tk 260 per kg,” he said.

Anis Ahmed, a chicken seller at Rayerbazar, said chicken prices were somewhat lower this week compared with last week, although they had risen slightly on Friday.

“We are selling broiler chicken for Tk 190–195 per kg. It was Tk 200 last week,” he said, adding that Sonali chicken remained unchanged at around Tk 320 per kg.
