Global shipping and logistics giant Maersk Line has expressed interest in directly investing in Bangladesh’s shipbuilding industry, while discussions were also held on potential investment in the country’s ship recycling sector.

The issues were discussed at a meeting on Saturday between Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Moller and Maersk representatives at the minister’s residence in Dhaka.

The Danish ambassador said Maersk was interested in making direct investment in Bangladesh’s shipbuilding industry. The minister also invited the company to invest in ship recycling alongside shipbuilding.

Muktadir said Bangladesh could emerge as a potential hub for both new shipbuilding and environmentally sound recycling of Maersk’s ageing vessels in line with international standards.

The meeting noted that Bangladesh has long-standing experience and strong potential in both sectors. Greater international investment could boost industrialisation and help unlock the country’s blue-economy potential, while creating jobs and facilitating technology and skills transfer.

Senior officials from the commerce and industry ministries, Maersk, A.P. Moller and the Royal Danish Embassy attended the meeting.
