Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro has proposed a three-city visit to Italy for Bangladeshi officials and business representatives to showcase the country’s leather-sector capabilities and attract Italian investment.
The proposed visit would cover Milan, Florence and Rome, with meetings with business organisations, visits to leather industry hubs in Tuscany and government-level discussions, according to a press release issued after a meeting between Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and the Italian ambassador at the Ministry of Commerce in Dhaka.
Prime Minister’s Finance and Planning Adviser Professor Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir was also present at the meeting.
Muktadir said the proposed visit would focus on attracting new investors, expanding technological cooperation and strengthening international partnerships in Bangladesh’s leather industry.
The ambassador suggested holding meetings with business organisations in Milan, visiting leather industry areas in Tuscany and conducting government-level discussions in Rome to establish direct contacts with potential Italian investors.
The two sides also stressed the need for international-standard certification, stronger environmental management and a more investment-friendly business environment in Bangladesh’s leather sector.
Alessandro said progress in these areas would help expand mutually beneficial partnerships between companies from Bangladesh and Italy.
Waste management at the Savar Leather Industrial Estate was also discussed at the meeting.
The Bangladesh side said large factories would be encouraged to develop their own waste-management facilities, while central facilities would continue to serve smaller factories. Plans are also underway to promote the recycling of industrial waste.
The meeting also discussed the registration process of the Italy Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh.
Both sides expressed optimism about expanding trade, investment, technological cooperation and industrial partnerships between the two countries.
