Prices of packaged liquid milk have increased by up to Tk 10 per litre as private dairy companies followed the price hike introduced by state-owned Milk Vita last month.
According to market information, one litre of packaged liquid milk is now being sold at around Tk 110 at retail shops, while half-litre packs cost Tk 55 to Tk 60.
Milk Vita raised the price of its pasteurised liquid milk by Tk 10 per litre at the beginning of August, taking the retail price to Tk 110. The price of its 500ml standard low-fat milk was increased by Tk 5 to Tk 60, while its toned milk also rose by Tk 5 to Tk 55.
About one and a half months later, private companies also raised their prices. Brands including Aarong, PRAN and Farm Fresh (Akij Dairy) are now selling one litre of liquid milk for Tk 110 to Tk 115, while half-litre packs cost Tk 55.
Milk producers attributed the price adjustment to higher production costs, including transportation, wages for milk collectors, packaging materials, cattle feed, and gas and electricity expenses.
Milk Vita had earlier said its cost of producing a litre of milk had increased by Tk 11 to Tk 11.50.
The latest increase comes amid rising prices of several other essential commodities. Bottled soybean oil prices were raised by Tk 5 per litre earlier this month, while broiler chicken has remained around Tk 200 per kilogram and eggs at about Tk 150 per dozen.
