Heavy rainfall has disrupted cargo handling at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, with adverse weather affecting operations for a second straight day.
Cargo transfers between oceangoing vessels and lighter vessels have been hampered since Tuesday as persistent rain continues to lash the port city.
However, operations at the port’s main jetties remain normal, according to the Chattogram Port Authority.
Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim said rain-sensitive cargo cannot be handled during heavy rainfall, causing partial disruption at the outer anchorage.
He added that there has been no major impact on container handling at the main jetties.
Meanwhile, the port authority postponed Wednesday’s written examination for the post of Transport Officer due to the adverse weather.
The Patenga Meteorological Office recorded 237.5mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 9:00am Wednesday, after Chattogram received 412mm in the previous 24 hours—the highest single-day rainfall in 42 years.
