A Pakistani cargo plane carrying five crew members has gone missing over the Arabian Sea while en route from the United Arab Emirates to Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported on Wednesday that the aircraft disappeared after the pilot reported a navigation problem and requested assistance from the Area Control Centre (ACC).

According to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the K2 Airways Boeing 737-400 freighter departed Sharjah for Karachi on Tuesday. The aircraft later vanished from radar over the Arabian Sea, about 300km west of Karachi.

The PAA said radar data showed the aircraft rapidly losing altitude and making a sudden change in course at 9:21pm local time before contact was lost approximately 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.

A search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies was launched immediately after communication with the aircraft was lost. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the missing plane and its five crew members.
