The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday gave policy approval to relocate the Sayedabad Inter-District Bus Terminal to Kanchpur as part of the government’s efforts to ease traffic congestion in the capital.
The approval came at a meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
According to meeting sources, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities to make the new Kanchpur terminal operational within the next four months.
To meet the deadline, the committee approved implementing the project through the Direct Procurement Method (DPM), with the state-owned Chittagong Dry Dock Limited under the Bangladesh Navy entrusted with carrying out the work.
The approved project includes the construction of terminal sheds, ticket counters, toilets, office rooms and other supporting infrastructure at the Kanchpur bus terminal.
Sources said the relocation is part of a broader government initiative to modernise Dhaka’s traffic management system and reduce chronic congestion by shifting the Sayedabad terminal outside the city’s core.
Following the prime minister’s directive, the Local Government Division instructed the Dhaka South City Corporation to complete the necessary infrastructure and make the proposed Kanchpur terminal ready for operation within four months.
