The government has taken an initiative to resolve longstanding legal and administrative complications in shrimp farm management across the country, revive activities in the sector and increase revenue earnings.

As part of the move, committees responsible for managing shrimp farms at upazila, district and national levels will be reconstituted, while relevant laws and policies will be amended where necessary.

The government will also take effective measures to protect the interests of shrimp farmers and people involved in the sector, Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu said.

He made the remarks while briefing reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting on shrimp farm management across the country at the conference room of the Ministry of Land at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed attended the meeting as the chief guest. Land State Minister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, the land ministry secretary and senior officials of relevant departments were also present.

Minu said the shrimp sector had enormous economic potential, but various complications had developed in its management over several decades.

As a result, the government was failing to collect the expected revenue, while people involved in shrimp farming were facing various difficulties in running their operations.

The government was giving serious attention to resolving these problems, he said.

He said developing the shrimp sector was important not only for increasing government revenue but also because the livelihoods and economic activities of a large number of people depended on it.

Speaking after the meeting, State Minister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin said an order issued in 2016 had established a framework for shrimp farm management and revenue collection from the sector.

The meeting discussed how revenue could be collected effectively under that order, he said.

He added that irregularities and mismanagement in the past had deprived the country of significant revenue.

To address the situation, committees responsible for shrimp farm management at upazila, district and national levels would be reconstituted and made more effective, he said.
