The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has sought five years of production data for 17 leading pharmaceutical companies as part of a drive to verify VAT compliance and strengthen revenue collection.
The Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU) has requested the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) to provide product-wise production records from the 2021–22 fiscal year onward to cross-check them against VAT returns.
The companies are Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, Beximco Pharmaceuticals PLC, Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Renata PLC, SKF Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Aristopharma Ltd, Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Ltd, The ACME Laboratories Ltd, Essential Drugs Company Ltd, Drug International Ltd, General Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Navana Pharmaceuticals PLC, Novista Pharma PLC, Orion Pharma Ltd, Pacific Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Synovia Pharma PLC, and Ibn Sina Pharmaceutical Industry PLC.
The NBR said the exercise is part of its routine VAT monitoring programme aimed at identifying any mismatch between actual production and declared VAT.
The DGDA said it is reviewing the legal provisions before deciding whether the requested information can be shared, while industry representatives argued that the NBR already has access to much of the required data through VAT returns, Business Identification Numbers (BINs) and import records.
