Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today pledged continued government support to promote mathematics education and expand Mathematics Olympiad activities across the country, particularly at the grassroots and school levels.
“We will provide whatever support is required from the government in the future to further expand mathematics practice and Mathematics Olympiad activities in the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister made the remarks when Bangladeshi medal winners of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) paid a courtesy call on him at his office at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat, said PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin.
During the meeting, the students shared their experiences of participating in international mathematics competitions and discussed their achievements with the Prime Minister.
Tarique congratulated the students on their outstanding performances and wished them greater success in the future.
Representatives of the Bangladesh Girls’ Mathematical Foundation sought government support to expand and strengthen Mathematics Olympiad activities at the grassroots level.
The Prime Minister assured them of the government’s necessary support.
He also gave immediate consent to a proposal to establish a fund through the Ministry of Education for organising and expanding school-level Mathematics Olympiad programmes.
A proposal by the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BdMO) to introduce activity-based mathematics education at the school level also received the Prime Minister’s approval.
Another proposal called for introducing a separate mathematics competency assessment for schoolteachers, modelled on the IELTS system used to assess English-language proficiency.
Tarique said he would consider the proposal with due importance.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Education and Primary and Mass Education Mahdi Amin, International Mathematical Olympiad national coach Mahbubul Alam Majumder, Bangladesh Girls’ Mathematical Foundation Chair Professor Sadia Hamid Kazi and Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee member Md Abdul Hakim Khan were present.
The medal-winning students at the meeting included Monami Zaman of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, who won bronze medals at both the IMO and EGMO; Md Raihan Siddiqui of Chattogram College, an IMO silver medalist; Jawad Hamim Chowdhury of Dhaka Imperial College, an IMO bronze medalist; Mohammad Marzuk Rahman of Cantonment English School and College, an IMO bronze medalist; Tahsin Khan of Ananda Mohan College, an IMO bronze medalist; M Jamiul Hossain of RAJUK Uttara Model School and College, an IMO bronze medalist; and Saji Sehnai of RAJUK Uttara Model School and College, an EGMO bronze medalist.
