Students seeking admission to Class XI will get only one opportunity to apply online under a proposed new system, unlike previous years when multiple application phases were allowed, the Education Ministry has said.
Under the proposed rules, students will no longer be able to change colleges or migrate after their admission is confirmed.
A meeting of a committee comprising experts from the Education Ministry, various education boards and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was held on August 16 to finalise the Class XI admission policy.
Under the new system, students who have passed the SSC and equivalent examinations will apply online once by selecting their preferred colleges. As there will be no subsequent application phases, the existing migration facility will also be discontinued.
However, students whose examination results change following scrutiny or re-evaluation of their answer scripts will be given another opportunity to apply.
Additional provisions are also being planned for students who miss the initial application deadline, fail to confirm their admission, are not allocated a college or are excluded from the application process for any reason.
The ministry is planning to complete the entire admission process within September and start Class XI lessons in the final week of the month. Students who secure a college after re-evaluation of their results are expected to begin classes by October 1.
The Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee had initially proposed opening online applications on September 15, completing admissions by November 10 and starting classes on November 12.
The Education Ministry, however, did not approve the proposal and instructed the authorities to bring forward the admission schedule.
Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, said the Class XI admission policy is being formulated and is expected to be finalised by Thursday.
He said the proposed changes are aimed at restoring discipline in academic activities by completing the admission process and starting classes earlier.
The final policy will be issued by the Education Ministry after reviewing the committee’s proposal, he added.
According to the academic calendar, Class XI classes are supposed to begin on July 1. However, delayed SSC results and admission processes in recent years have made it difficult to start classes on time.
Last year, SSC results were published on July 10 and Class XI classes began on September 15 after the admission process was completed.
This year, SSC results were published on August 10, prompting the Education Ministry to seek completion of the admission process within September and the start of classes without further delay.
