East West University (EWU) celebrated its 30th anniversary in a festive atmosphere with a day-long programme at its campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka, on Saturday.

The celebrations began in the morning with members of the university’s Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty members, students and alumni releasing colourful balloons to mark the formal opening of the day’s events.

A colourful rally then paraded through the campus and surrounding areas.

A commemorative session and cultural programme were later held at the university’s open courtyard.

EWU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shams Rahman delivered the welcome address at the event.

Prof Dr Anindita Pal spoke on behalf of the faculty, while Rozina Parvin represented the university’s officials. Dr Rubana Huq, vice-chancellor of Asian University for Women and an EWU alumna, spoke on behalf of the alumni.

Munize Manzur, a member of the Board of Trustees, represented the board, while former EWU vice-chancellor Prof Dr MM Shahidul Hasan also spoke at the event.

EWU founding vice-chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin addressed the programme as the chief guest.

During the commemorative session, speakers recalled the university’s journey since September 1996, when it began with only 20 students.

They highlighted the university’s achievements over the past three decades in providing quality education and conducting research, while also outlining plans and directions for further strengthening EWU’s position in the international academic community.
